The Most Common Spice Myths Debunked

Myths and legends exist about just about everything in life, including spices. Most people are misinformed and buy into spice myths that are completely misunderstood. There is a lot of information out there about spices that are false.

In this article, we debunk old spice legends, giving you the low down on what is real when it comes to spices – straight from the experts

What Are Spice Myths?

We would need a good amount of time to figure out how and where myths about spices came from. It’s not important to understand where they originated from but rather whether they have any basis in fact or should be believed today at all. Here are the most common spice legends debunked for you.

The Most Popular Spice Myths

We would need a good amount of time to figure out how and where myths about spices came from. It’s not important to understand where they originated from but rather whether they have any basis in fact or should be believed today at all. Here are the most common spice legends debunked for you.

Spices are not natural

Spices are always made from natural ingredients that have been dried, so we are not sure how much more natural you can get. Seeds, herbs, and other plant-based elements are removed from natural plants and put through a drying process which can enhance their flavouring and is a natural way of adding spices and seasoning to your food.

Spicy food can cause ulcer

We hear this myth all the time! It’s one of the most common myths about spices and it could not be further from the truth. A study showed that the active compound in most spicy or hot spices like chilli, is called capsaicin, and it has been proven to improve symptoms of stomach ulcers.
There are many reasons why stomach ulcers may occur, from high acid levels to stress. They can cause moderate discomfort and can also be severely painful. If you do experience pain or discomfort in your stomach, it’s best to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Spices should always be used fresh, not dry

Drying fresh herbs and spices can enhance the robust flavour of some spices, so drying them can be better. Whether you choose fresh or dried spices, either way, you will be getting health benefits and wholesome flavour, without any problems.

Spices don’t need preservation

This again is simply not true. Spices too have a shelf-life and need to be kept well to retain their freshness. Spices will lose their flavouring and aroma if left in the cupboard for years. Always keep your spices in an air-tight container in the cupboard, away from direct sunlight for best preservation results.

Spicy foods kill taste buds

Spicy foods and hot spices (like chilli) do not kill tastebuds but can rather momentarily numb them. Your body (and tastebuds) will build a tolerance to spicy foods over time, but they will never be killed off or die as a result of eating spicy or hot ingredients.

Where Do These Spice Myths Come From?

Trying to find where a myth comes from, is about as easy as finding a microscopic needle in a haystack. Virtually impossible. Myths are made stronger through generations of people believing them to be true. Perhaps you heard a myth about spice from your grandmother, who was probably taught a myth about spicy food from her grandmother. Either way, it’s important to know whether the myth you believe to be true is, in fact, so. The reality about myths, of course, is they tend to be false more often than not.
